Zenserver 0.5

Zenserver is a GNU/Linux server distribution based on Zenwalk. Both Zenwalk and Zenserver are backward compatible with Slackware. Zenserver stands out from other server distributions in a few ways. Very few server distributions are based upon the reliability and simplicity of Slackware. Slackware was built using the "keep it simple"principle. Zenserver will try to follow that principle while going above and beyond a standard server distribution. Finally, Zenserver will strive to use only the best of the best software, in addition, to a set of standard LAMP packages.

Zenserver 0.5 main features:

• Linux kernel 2.6.19.7 with the GRSecurity patch
• Based on the very reliable .tgz package management system.
• Lighttpd is the default HTTPD as opposed to Apache. Most distributions ship with Apache as default, and many don't even have a Lighttpd package. Zenserver's ZSAdmin-Lighttpd can configure Lighttpd to use different web scripting languages without the admin having to edit the configuration file by hand. Lighttpd was chosen over Apache due to the fact that it is much faster and lighter (many benchmarks prove this). You can still use the normal Apache if you really want or need it.
• Zenserver strives to have few folders world-writable, for example /root is inaccessible through non-root accounts by default. Permissions can easily be changed, but good, safe out-of-the-box defaults are always preferable.
• X.org (GUI) is not included in Zenserver, since the X.org server has few front ends for server daemons. Instead, there are easy-to-use dialog-based (ncurses) scripts for configuring various aspects of the system.
• Excellent console tools, such as lftp, mc, elinks, htop, VIM, nano, ADOM (for reliving boredom), ctorrentdnh, and others.
• Updates are frequent and many times new functionality is added. All updates are designed not to break any aspect of the system, but also give you the new functionality before the next release. Zenserver's modified version of Netpkg (from Zenwalk) does not have to prompt during updates, making it much easier to setup automatic updates.
• Servers MySQL, BIND, Postfix, Samba
